I completed two modules on Trailheads:

  • Territory Management Basics
  • Territory Management Best Practices

These modules both included challenges involved with setting up territory management.

Initially, territory management must be enabled in the setup menu. When it is enabled you choose settings. I was surprised that there is a reference to Apex classes in this setup menu.

Then you create a territory model. Once you do this you view its hierarchy and that’s when you can add territories within that model. For example, below I have the territory of US East Coast.

Territories can have assignment rules and also there can be accounts manually assigned to them.

I also cloned a territory model, which I can imagine would be useful in designing and testing a new one.
